Ocean Career: Fisheries and Oceans Canada Research Scientist—Physical Oceanography

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is seeking to fill the position of Research Scientist—Physical Oceanography.

Duties

As a Research Scientist SE-RES, you’ll undertake a variety of duties such as:

  • Document and understand physical oceanographic processes in the Northwest Atlantic in the context of DFO Atlantic zone ocean observing programs.
  • Collaborate with DFO and external scientists to investigate the influence of physical oceanography on biogeochemistry and the marine ecosystem.
  • Provide advice and recommendations as needed across client sectors to support DFO priorities as defined in the Departmental Plan.
  • Design and perform independent, collaborative, and original scientific research through development of novel concepts and methodologies.
  • Synthesize and integrate model and observational data to improve the understanding of the state of the ocean.
  • Lead and/or collaborate with scientists participating in related research and development projects.
  • Prepare scientific documents for publication, including peer-reviewed scientific articles, DFO technical reports and research documents.
  • Communicate scientific research and advice in presentations to various clients including DFO and external scientists, managers, stakeholders, and the public.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in conducting independent research in physical oceanography (please note graduate school research for M.Sc. or Ph.D. thesis is not considered sufficient to meet this criteria).
  • Experience in analysis and interpretation of physical oceanographic data.
  • Experience in conducting research at sea (with at least 7 days at sea).
  • Experience in authoring scientific publications in international peer reviewed journals with at least two papers in the last 5 years and at least one of which is a first author publication.
  • Experience presenting research at conferences, symposia, workshops, or other professional meetings

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of the role of physical oceanographic processes in determining the ocean climate.
  • Knowledge of how physical oceanographic processes affect living resources.
  • Knowledge of physical oceanographic measurement methods and technologies.

Compensation: $66,925 to $172,985
