Other responsibilities include identifying and characterizing relevant biological and fishery data useful for analyzing management actions in fisheries management plans through available sources, such as National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), state and university laboratories, and other agencies or institutions. This is a forward-facing position with several opportunities to interact with a broad range of stakeholders on behalf of the Council. The work requires travel throughout the Gulf of Mexico and elsewhere as needed, to attend Council meetings and other related meetings such as Scientific and Statistical Committee, stock assessment, and Advisory Panel meetings.
Qualifications
Minimally, a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major study and research emphasis in the field of marine fisheries biology, marine resource management, environmental sciences, population dynamics, or equivalent. The individual should also have strong oral and written communication skills to interact with the general public, other staff, federal and state agency employees, and Council members.
Preference will be given for knowledge of Gulf of Mexico fishery management systems, fisheries biology/ecology and benthic habitats as well as demonstrated proficiency in technical writing, knowledge of stock assessment modeling, and experience with large data sets.
Salary Range: This is a non-federal full-time position with benefits. Starting salary range GS11/12 equivalent ($72,553/$86,962) commensurate with education (M.S. or Ph.D.), years of experience, and qualifications.
