About the role
The successful candidate for the Marine Economist post will integrate with multidisciplinary teams, across NOC and beyond, to provide economic assessments of marine habitats, and thereby contribute to informed decision making regarding, and management of, the marine environment. This will be achieved by the postholder’s application of economic analyses, such as the provision of natural capital assessments to quantify marine ecosystem services, stocks and flows, and cost benefit analysis of marine management interventions. The economic analysis performed will incorporate input data generated by habitat mapping and characterization, associated ecological and biogeochemical parameters, as well as socio economic data.
The position is offered at a postdoctoral level but has significant capacity for rapid career development via a greater role in the formulation of future research proposals. The postholder will be expected to write and submit academic peer-reviewed papers, and present at, and participate in, academic conferences and workshops etc. The postholder will also engage across a diverse range of stakeholders and work directly with governance, NGO’s, etc., thereby necessitating an ability to communicate information effectively with laypersons via written and oral means.
About you
You will apply economic analyses, such as the provision of natural capital assessments to quantify marine ecosystem services, stocks and flows, and cost benefit analysis of marine management interventions. The economic analysis performed will incorporate input data generated by habitat mapping and characterization, associated ecological and biogeochemical parameters, as well as socio-economic data.
You will contribute to NOC’s active engagement with governance and other stakeholders to communicate information to underpin the management and safeguarding of marine resources for the benefit of society. The postholder will also utilize their economic analysis skills to contribute to the evaluation of various schemes which channel private finance towards marine habitat conservation or restoration. On the longer term, it is expected that the candidate will contribute to the development of further projects in this field.

Location
This position will be based in Southampton. The center is well connected by public transport and has ample cycle parking in addition to free onsite car-parking.
The NOC has a hybrid working approach where for most positions staff can work from home up to 2 days per week.
Salary: £40,444 – £44,366
