About the role
This role is part of NOC’s Digital Ocean program and, working alongside AI specialists, software engineers, and data scientists, it will contribute to create the “NOC of the future”.
Our team designs and develops digital capabilities (e.g., platforms, AI tools, training) and knowledge networks to support innovation across NOC and the wider international oceanographic community. Our projects encompass topics such as interactive visualization, robotics and autonomous systems, big data analysis and Digital Twins.
This role provides excellent opportunities for learning a wide variety of new skills and working across ocean-related, multi-disciplinary, and international communities. It is intended to bring innovative design-based approaches to enable interdisciplinary collaboration across science/technology/engineering and among internal and external stakeholders – from expert users to the public. For this purpose, a good understanding of software engineering, simulation-based approaches, human-computer interaction, as well as natural sciences will be required.
About you
You will be a designer who is strongly motivated by the opportunity to apply your skills to meet the challenges of oceanographic research. You will have experience and interest in the areas listed above and be eager to learn and further develop your skills.
Expertise dealing with oceanography or environmental knowledge and data is helpful, but not essential.
You will be a strong team player but also able to work on your own and proactively interact with users and colleagues to identify solutions. You will care about the quality of the solutions you produce, following good design, science and technology practices and listening to feedback from users.
We are seeking to grow the team with a range of levels of experience and are happy to consider candidates at band 5 or band 6 for this position. You can find more information in the attached job descriptions.
Applicants at Band 5 in particular will be expected to demonstrate how they can:
- take a leading technical role in projects, particularly those with a higher degree of complexity;
- support the Head of Ocean Informatics in driving improvements to our processes and developing the Ocean Informatics team; and
- contribute to revenue generation, by providing relevant input to funding applications.

Location
This position can be based in Southampton or Liverpool. Our Southampton site is well connected by public transport and has ample cycle parking in addition to free onsite car-parking with over 40 EV charging points. The Liverpool center is part of the University campus and is only a short walk from the city center and Lime Street station.
