Ocean Internship: Open Ocean Robotics USV Pilot Intern

Operating on the ocean around the world from Victoria BC, Open Ocean Robotics (OOR) is a growing startup transforming how we understand the oceans through better data. OOR is a leader in solar-powered Uncrewed Surface Vehicles (USVs) that voyage inhospitable ocean environments autonomously for extended missions. Core Responsibilities

  • Participate and assist in USV deployment and recovery operations
  • Pilot OOR’s Uncrewed Surface Vehicles (USVs) either in-house o remotely
  • Conduct small-vessel operations in support of USV field work on the water
  • Help plan field operations, including scheduling, USV preparation, and data collection
  • Support collection and organization of oceanographic, meteorological, and other data
  • Analyze various data including ocean properties, acoustics, and engineering output of USVs
  • Assist writing detailed reports including data acquisition methods, analysis, and results
  • Work collaboratively with OOR project managers and technical teams to support both customer and company goals

Requirements

  • On-water experience with small vessels and boating
  • Strong organizational, planning, and prioritization skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to communicate technical information in a clear and understandable manner
  • Experience in data analysis and related activities
  • Undergraduate degree in marine technology, ocean science, engineering, or similar
  • Adaptable and enthusiastic about a startup company environment
  • Passionate about advancing innovative technology and making an impact
  • Ability to lift >50 pounds
  • Valid Driver’s license

Skills & Qualifications – Not required but an asset  

  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) training, or higher 
  • Small Domestic Vessel – Basic Safety (SDV-BS) training (formerly “MED – A3”)
  • Radio Restricted Operator Certificate (ROC-M)  
  • Marine First Aid Certificate (MFAC)
  • Experience with robotic ocean vehicle deployments
