TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have signed an agreement for the long-term supply of green and low-carbon hydrogen to TotalEnergies' refining—petrochemical platform in Normandy. This project contributes to the decarbonization of the Gonfreville platform and will reduce the site's annual CO2 emissions by up to 150,000 tons per year.
This cooperation between Air Liquide and TotalEnergies is part of the shared ambition of the two companies to contribute to decarbonizing the industrial activities of the Seine Axis.
The project provides for the supply of 10,000 tons of green hydrogen per year to the TotalEnergies platform in Normandy and in addition up to 5,000 tons of low-carbon hydrogen from the second half of 2026. It includes two integrated components:
- The production of green and low-carbon hydrogen by the Normand'hy electrolyser, built and operated by Air Liquide, with a total electrical capacity of 200 MW. TotalEnergies will benefit from access to half of this production capacity, corresponding to the quantity of hydrogen delivered to its refinery.
- The supply by TotalEnergies of approximately 700 GWh per year of renewable, low-carbon electricity, intended to power the Air Liquide electrolyser up to 100 MW, a volume corresponding to the share of hydrogen delivered to the TotalEnergies refinery in Normandy.
“This association with Air Liquide marks a new stage in TotalEnergies' ambition to decarbonize the hydrogen consumed by its refineries in Europe by 2030. By powering the electrolyser with renewable electricity from solar and wind projects, TotalEnergies is taking advantage of its positioning as an integrated electricity player,” declared Bernard Pinatel, General Manager Refining-Chemicals.
“This agreement with TotalEnergies illustrates our ability to offer concrete decarbonization solutions to our customers. Air Liquide Normand'Hy is part of the decarbonization trajectory of our assets but also in our commitment to supporting the industrial and transport sectors in reducing their carbon footprint. Our collaboration with TotalEnergies strengthens the hydrogen sector throughout Normandy. Supported by the French State and the European Union, the Air Liquide Normand'Hy project confirms our commitment to developing the production of renewable, low-carbon hydrogen by electrolysis on an industrial scale,” said Pascal Vinet, Deputy Managing Director, member of the executive committee of the Air Liquide group, supervising Europe Industries activities.
