AXA XL U.K. Associates of BIOS Research Internship

Over the years the U.K. Associates of BIOS (Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences) have provided generous scholarship funding to many students from institutions all over the U.K. enabling them to participate in research internships and attend summer courses at BIOS.

Students from institutions such as University of Southampton, University of Exeter, University of Liverpool, University of Reading, Bangor University, Swansea University, University of the Highlands and Islands, Cardiff University, Imperial College London and University of St. Andrews have received financial support.

Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in U.K. colleges or universities are eligible to apply for U.K. Associates of BIOS funding.

The U.K. Associates of BIOS are offering a full scholarship for a student to participate in a 12-week research internship at BIOS in 2022, thanks to the generosity of AXA XL. This scholarship will cover the cost of the intern’s accommodation and meals at BIOS, as well as providing a small student stipend and a contribution to research expenses associated with the intern’s research project. Scholarship funds do not cover travel expenses or medical/travel insurance.

The U.K. Associates of BIOS Internship Application Form is available here and the deadline for receipt of completed applications and required supporting documents is April 1, 2022. Successful applicants will be matched with available mentors and projects. In your application please clearly state which areas of BIOS research interest you and why.

Former U.K. Associates of BIOS Interns have said:

  • “My BIOS internship involved developing skills in scientific research techniques, field work and data processing as well as public speaking. These skills are valuable and provide me with a solid foundation for my pursuit of a marine science career. During my time at BIOS, I learned a lot about what it takes to carry out a practical research project.” Freja Azzopardi, 2021
  • “My internship focused on differentially expressed genes in gut cells, but it has taught me much more than that. The entire internship has been an opportunity to learn from my mentor about his field of research and to fully explore an impressive dataset. The flexibility, patience, and understanding of the staff have ensured that the remote internship was highly tailored, allowing me to focus on making the most of this opportunity.” Paula Benders, 2021
  • “My internship project as well as my supervisor inspired me and helped me to decide that ocean remote sensing is the field I want to work in. The past five weeks have been an amazing experience for me.” Michelia Wibowo, 2021
