Job Opportunity: Postdoctoral Researcher with Bigelow Laboratory

Overview

Bigelow Laboratory invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scientist to study the accumulation of trace metal micronutrients such as iron, manganese, zinc, nickel, copper, and cobalt by marine phytoplankton. The position will focus on two projects: analyses of single-cell samples collected from the BATS site as part of the BAIT program (NSF award: NSFGEO-NERC: Collaborative Research: Using Time-series Field Observations to Constrain an Ocean Iron Model), and experiments with cultured phytoplankton and natural samples to adapt high-speed sorting flow cytometry to isolate phytoplankton for subsequent trace metal analysis. There will also likely be opportunities for field work on upcoming cruises.

The position is a full-time, 2-year appointment. Work will be based at Bigelow Laboratory's campus in East Boothbay, Maine but may include opportunities for participation in a research cruise, as well as travel to national laboratory facilities for synchrotron-based analyses. Annual salary is negotiable based on experience.

Requirements

Minimum requirements are a PhD in marine science, oceanography, or related field. Preferred qualifications include an ability and interest to work across biological and chemical disciplines, culture marine microorganisms, and conduct biogeochemical research using trace-metal clean techniques. Knowledge of ICP-MS, synchrotron techniques, and/or sorting flow cytometry methods is also desired. The preferred candidate will have published (or submitted) their dissertation chapters in peer-reviewed journals.

Application Deadline: May 15, 2020
