Job Opportunity: Postdoctoral Scientist at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences

The water column below the photic zone constitutes 90% of the ocean’s volume and contains three quarters of its biomass.

Bacteria and archaea inhabiting this vast environment mediate many global biogeochemical cycles and control the aphotic end of the ocean’s biological pump, yet remain largely unexplored. The postdoctoral scientist will assume a leading role in the first systematic, lineage-resolved analyses of the coding potential for chemoautotrophy and will contribute to studies of horizontal gene transfer and phage-host interactions in the aphotic ocean. They will be advised by Dr. R. Stepanauskas and will be engaged in an international group of collaborating scientists. The position is offered for a period of three years.

Bigelow Laboratory is an inclusive community of scientists from around the world that welcomes and supports diverse opinions and cultures. The postdoctoral scientists at Bigelow Laboratory have access to professional training programs, opportunities for undergraduate student mentoring and teaching, and generous employment benefits. The Laboratory was established in 1974 and is located on the scenic coast of East Boothbay, Maine, USA, in a modern, LEED-certified research and education campus.
