Job opportunity: Postdoctoral Scientist in Marine Food Security at Kiel University

The Center for Ocean and Society is the newly established cross faculty research unit of the priority research area Kiel Marine Science at Kiel University. The Center aims to present a significant contribution to the sustainable use of coasts and the ocean and seeks to link social justice for both present and future generations together with respect for the environment.

The Center serves as a platform for scientists and stakeholders to assess and synthesize scientific results and aims to develop practical solutions for the sustainable use of marine and coastal resources. The Center’s scientists also aim to contribute to the solution of pressing environmental and societal problems by conducting high-level inter- and transdisciplinary research.

For one of their central activities they are recruiting a Postdoctoral Scientist in Marine Food Security as soon as possible. The position involves participation in teaching and in some administrative tasks of the Center. The salary corresponds to E14 on the TV-L government scale. The regular weekly workload amounts to 100 % of a fulltime position. The position is until June 30, 2023 to substitute for a colleague on leave, but the candidate is expected to develop her or his own nationally and internationally visible research programme in accordance with the aims of the Center. Prolongation of the position is not excluded. They are looking for a candidate with a research profile in the field of living marine resources, with a focus on food security and a proven record of inter- and transdisciplinary research at the interface of social and natural sciences.

Requirements for the position:

  • PhD degree in the field of fishery biology, marine biology or ecology, ecosystem management, or a related area
  • Very good international research publication and impact track record
  • Evidence of national and international personal networks in the field of living marine organisms and natural/artificial food resources
  • Evidence of inter- and transdisciplinary research and public outreach
  • Very good knowledge of written and spoken English and German
  • Experience with third party funding and personnel management will be an advantage

Duties of the position:

  • Establishing and coordinating a research area as part of the Center
  • Establishing disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research projects
  • Support of the Center’s team with establishing and implementing its agenda
  • Independent acquisition of third-party funding through own original proposals and co-work on the Center’s funding strategies
  • Leading inter- and transdisciplinary projects as well as building capacity - 9 hours / week teaching obligation

The position will be based at the Center for Ocean and Society under the operational leadership of the Director Prof. Dr. Marie-Catherine Riekhof and an affiliation at the faculty of Agricultural and Nutritional Science. The Center for Ocean and Society offers a dynamic team of interdiscipli- nary working scientists from different disciplines and a strong support and platform for stakeholder mapping and dialogue. Candidates are further encouraged to join other interdisciplinary projects and programmes in research and education at Kiel University, e.g. the “The Future Ocean Network” or the “Kiel School of Sustainability” (www.sustainability.uni-kiel.de), and to work with partner institutions, such as GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel or the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.

The position will offer an environment of independent research in the field of Marine Food Security. You will further have the opportunity to supervise graduate students at the School of Sustainability and within the framework of new marine master programmes to be established.
