Kelp Hatchery Internship at GreenWave

GreenWave is a non-profit organization that trains and supports regenerative ocean farmers in the era of climate change.

We work with coastal communities throughout North America to create a blue green economy—built and led by ocean farmers—that ensures we all make a living on a living planet. Through our programming, new ocean farmers receive training and support that help them start and run successful ocean farms. We also support research that addresses barriers and creates opportunities for ocean farmers.

Job Description

GreenWave seeks applicants to fill three paid internship positions in our kelp hatchery, a lab that produces seed for the GreenWave farm and other ocean farms in our network. Interns will receive mentorship and hands-on training as well as opportunities to engage in cutting edge research. This is a hands-on 150-hour internship (approximately 10 hours/week) from September through December based in New Haven, CT. Interns will be paid $17/hr.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Take detailed notes and document work in a daily log book and spreadsheets
  • Monitor water quality parameters such as temperature, salinity, pH, light intensity, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients
  • Collect data to monitor and improve seed quality and hatchery efficiency
  • Steward kelp cultures in collaboration with the Science Lead
  • Participate in kelp spore release, seedings, and monitoring of seed growth
  • Execute GreenWave hatchery protocols and procedures, including cleaning and fixing aquaria, sanitizing
  • hatchery equipment, and preparing spools for seeding and outplanting
  • Assist the Hatchery Manager and Science Lead with daily chores
  • Contribute to weekly scientific article discussions
  • Assist the Hatchery team in executing experimental design and research

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • Work or educational experience in ocean farming or related fields is a plus
  • Exceptional organizational and record keeping skills with attention to detail
  • Collaborative and dependable
  • Willingness to learn a new system inside and out with no-task-is-too-small attitude
  • Great problem solving skills, and ability to rapidly troubleshoot maintenance issues as they arise
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, light construction, PVC plumbing, and use of power tools
  • Experience working in a lab, familiarity with a compound microscope is a plus
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs
  • Patient and able to follow strict protocols
