This newly created two-year position will be part of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) Editorial Team and will also work with the Video Lab and the Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA) video and social media teams.
MBARI invites recent graduates with a degree in multimedia journalism, environmental filmmaking, media studies, communications, or science writing to participate in an inaugural science communication fellowship. This new two-year communications fellowship provides a unique opportunity to tell inspiring stories about ocean science, technology, and conservation; gain experience while working with a leading team of scientists, engineers, and science communicators; and create and share stories about MBARI and MBA.
MBARI are looking for a skilled multimedia content creator who cares deeply about telling science, technology, and conservation stories and has tremendous intellectual curiosity, a creative and team-oriented spirit, and a passion for finding ways to engage new and diverse audiences. Recent graduates with experience or an interest in ocean exploration and conservation will find the fellowship particularly rewarding.
The fellowship is designed to provide broad exposure to the research, education, and outreach efforts at MBARI and MBA. The fellow will join MBARI’s Editorial Team, which is made up of scientists and communicators, and will be based at MBARI’s facility in Moss Landing, California. They will also collaborate with MBA’s video and social media teams located in Pacific Grove. The fellow will contribute at both a strategic and tactical level to MBARI’s ongoing outreach activities and campaigns. They will collaborate with the MBARI team as they create videos, news articles, press releases, social media posts, live video streams, infographics, animations, and institutional reports and on joint projects between MBARI and MBA, including communications for the upcoming exhibit on the deep sea launching in early 2021.
The fellow will have the opportunity to go to sea aboard MBARI’s two research vessels, the Western Flyer and the Rachel Carson. They will also have access to MBARI’s one-of-a-kind video library with more than 26,000 hours of underwater footage captured by their remotely operated vehicles.
The mission of MBARI is to advance marine science and engineering to understand the changing ocean. The mission of MBA is to inspire ocean conservation.
Bachelor’s or master’s degree is required. A focus on multimedia journalism, environmental filmmaking, media studies, communications, or science writing is preferred.
Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and video editing programs such as Adobe Premier or Final Cut Pro is preferred.
