A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline.
AIS is looking for a Marine Mammal Researcher to help carry out the Marine Mammals Management (MMM) offices stewardship responsibilities for protected marine mammals and habitats. This selected candidate will facilitate implementation of agency mandates and assist in achieving the objectives of conservation of trust species and their associated habitats.
Primary Function
Housed within Fisheries and Ecological Services Division of the US Fish and Wildlife Service is the Marine Mammals Management (MMM) office, which oversees research, management, and conservation efforts on three marine mammal species in Alaska—polar bears, northern sea otters, and walrus—which are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and a subset are also protected under the Endangered Species Act.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Conducting literature reviews;
- Collecting, compiling and analyzing data;
- Conducting or participating in research and monitoring projects;
- Developing field study plans and associated budgets;
- Drafting reports and manuscripts;
- Evaluating the effect of proposed actions on species and habitats;
- Conducting and documenting site visits;
- Entering data and conducting quality control reviews and querying databases to extract data or determine the status of actions;
- Attending meetings, conferences, site visits;
- Conducting biological analysis of proposed actions;
- Preparing maps and other geographical displays and analysis;
- Evaluating the effectiveness of management decisions on species and habitats.
Compensation
Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated and total compensation will vary depending on candidates’ experience. This is a full–time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in quantitative ecology or statistics or demonstrated experience in these fields of study.
- Knowledge and experience using integrated population models, and Bayesian statistics
- Experience with program R and ArcGIS.
