Ocean Career: Aquaculture Research Specialist at AIS

A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is looking for an Aquaculture Research Specialist to support the National Marine Fisheries Services’ (NMFS) Advancing the Quality and Understanding of American Aquaculture (AQUAA) Act, to establish research to develop sustainable marine aquaculture methods.

Primary Function:

In 2020, Executive Order 13921 (E.O. 13921) on Promoting American Seafood Competitiveness and Economic Growth mandated establishment of two (2) Aquaculture Opportunity Areas (AOAs) annually, which will position aquaculture activities in federally managed waters, which requires development of programmatic Environmental Impact Statements (pEIS) as required by the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA). One category of impact includes disease & biosecurity of aquaculture in these locations.

The objective of this project is to provide scientific information in the topical areas of disease & biosecurity to support production of pEIS documents for the first two designated AOAs, updates of aquatic animal health plans, & advice for seafood trade biosecurity.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Task 1: Construct a database of scientific information on diseases of target aquaculture organisms & on agents affecting aquatic animal health & seafood biosecurity

  • Use multiple information resources, including but not limited to refereed literature; government & industry reports; relevant workshops, conferences & symposia; & subject matter expert consultations.

Task 2: Organize, conduct, & summarize workshops for information collection

Task 3: Synthesize informational documents & participate in consultation meetings to support writing activities of AOA NEPA leads, aquatic animal health plan updates, & biosecurity of seafood trade

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or higher, from an accredited college or university with a major directly related in a field of study as related to the requirements of specific task order with emphasis in aquatic animal health, fisheries sciences, aquaculture, marine ecology, or biological oceanography plus two (2) years of experience in related fields or a combination of such totaling six (6) years combined of education &/or experience.
  • A higher-level degree (e.g., Master's, PhD) in these fields may be substituted for experience.
  • The candidate must have excellent writing & organizational skills & must have familiarity with relational databases.
  • Demonstrated ability to accumulate relevant scientific information from a wide variety of sources & produce synthesis documents with properly annotated bibliographies.
  • Demonstrated experience working with databases capable of absorbing different types of information (text, numerical data, pdf files, photographs).
  • Ability to interact with scientists & aquaculture industry professionals representing a range of disciplines & located at international institutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to give oral presentations such as conference presentations (oral and/or poster) or other public presentations.
  • Must be able to drive a government vehicle.
