Ocean Career: Benthic Ecologist at the Institute of Marine Research

The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) wishes to increase its capacity to conduct research and provide advice related to benthic ecology and effects of anthropogenic effects on the marine environment. We seek a scientist with expertise in benthic ecology and preferably with high experience in conducting research and advice giving on anthropogenic impact in marine benthic ecosystems. This permanent position is hosted by the research group Benthic Resources and Processes. The work will primarily take place at the main office in Bergen. However, the position is also affiliated with the science group in Tromsø.

IMR provide advice on the management of human activity in connection to the marine environment e.g., fisheries, aquaculture, mining, petroleum activity, and invasive species. Our advice should be based on the best and updated science.

The successful candidate will work in a team of scientists and technicians to increase the knowledge on ecologic effects human activities related to marine nature types and communities along the Norwegian coast and in the deep sea. The candidate is expected to participate in the construction of management advice on such effects in addition to advice on sustainable aquaculture.

Qualification requirements

  • PhD in marine ecology, marine biology or relevant field
  • Experience with field studies on benthic habitat exposed to disturbance by human activities
  • Experience with conducting impact studies on benthic organisms in laboratories
  • Experience with studies on vulnerable habitats
  • Experience with species identifications of Norwegian benthic fauna
  • Solid publication rate
  • Availability of working in the field for longer periods (1-3 weeks)
  • Candidates must have good skills in spoken and written English, and it is an advantage if you master Norwegian or another Scandinavian language

The working language at IMR is Norwegian, and good communication skills in Norwegian will be beneficial for both the applicant and IMR. Sufficient progression in learning to speak and write Norwegian is expected during the first two years of employment. If necessary, language training will be offered and costs incurred will be reimbursed based upon completion of the language course.

Desired competencies

  • A few years of experience working as a scientist after completions of the PhD, eg., in a post doc. position
  • Broad experience in design and conducting of field studies
  • Experience on leading of field- campaigns and cruises
  • Knowledge of data handling eg., programming in R
  • Good understanding of oral and written Norwegian
  • Experience on communication of research results to management, industry and a public audience, and contribution to advice giving
