Ocean Career: Coastal Specialist at North Carolina Coastal Federation

This two-year position will assist federation staff to complete grant-funded oyster, living shoreline and wetland restoration projects.

It will help coordinate and track project deliverables, timelines, meetings, reporting requirements and contractors. The Coastal Specialist will report directly to the Coastal Scientist. This position is based out of the southeast region office, located in Wrightsville Beach, NC.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in planning, design, construction and monitoring of grant funded habitat restoration projects.
    -Communicate with contractors and project material suppliers
    -Help provide oversight of construction and contractors
    -Operate and maintain equipment needed to perform job responsibilities
  • Track regulatory permit application development, submittal and review
  • Coordinate project meetings
  • Perform outreach and education programs related to the restoration projects
    -Work with communication staff to promote project education and outreach efforts
    -Assist with project-related community outreach and communication initiatives
  • Provide support with project management and grant tracking and reporting

  • Ability to work outside year round
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds and work in physically demanding coastal environments
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills
  • Provide professional representation of the federation
  • Proficient computer skills including GIS
  • Strong personal environmental ethic

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in related field to job duties.
  • Three years of experience in coastal education and coastal resource management/restoration.
  • Demonstrated field ecology skills related to natural resource management and/or oyster and coastal wetland habitat restoration.
  • Field experiences pertaining to coastal education and coastal resource management/restoration.
  • East coast estuarine and coastal systems knowledge preferred.
  • Experience working around coastal waters.
  • Experience in project management, field work, and environmental management.
  • Experience operating power tools.
  • Experienced in using GIS software and Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Position: Full-time
Salary: $32,000 to $38,000
