Ocean Career: Conservation Science Senior Manager at Blue Ventures

Blue Ventures is a marine conservation organization that puts people first.

We support coastal fishers in remote and rural communities to rebuild fisheries, restore ocean life and build lasting pathways to prosperity. Our work began two decades ago in Madagascar’s remote coastal communities and is growing globally. Across a dozen countries, we’re partnering with traditional fishers and community organizations to design, scale, strengthen and sustain fisheries management and conservation at the community level. We bring partners together in networks to advocate for reform, and share tools and best practices to support fishing communities across the globe.

The Conservation Science Manager leads our evolving and growing conservation work in Timor-Leste that aims to empower and support small scale fishers to manage and govern their marine resources. As a senior member of the Timor-Leste team and reporting to the Country Director Timor-Leste, this position leads on setting medium and long-term priorities for the conservation programme, plays a critical role in securing new grants and manages the implementation of the conservation science programme.

The position holder contributes to ensuring local sustainability of the Timor-Leste country programme by mentoring Timorese junior staff to take on more programme leadership. It is a full-time role based in Dili, with frequent visits to our field sites. This position presents an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated marine conservation professional looking to play an instrumental role in further developing and managing an ambitious community-led conservation programme. The role is suitable for a motivated, proactive and highly organised individual, with proven team management and capacity development experience and excellent knowledge of the small-scale fisheries, marine science and marine conservation sectors. You will demonstrate a proven track record of project and grant design and management, mentoring/coaching, as well as exceptional written communications. In addition, you will have experience of community-based conservation and development initiatives in Timor-Leste or South-East Asia.

We are looking for an individual who is open to new ideas and embraces innovation, who can demonstrate experience of building effective working partnerships for conservation.

Assessment of applications will include candidates’ alignment with BV’s core values and mission to support human rights-based approaches to marine conservation and fisheries management. You will thrive in environments that are dynamic, fast-paced, collegiate and ambitious, and be able to demonstrate experience of working independently and solving complex problems in challenging situations.
