Ocean Career: Coral Nursery Manager at MOTE Marine Laboratory

Location: Mote’s Land-Based Coral Restoration Nursery on Islamorada, FL or Mote’s Land-Based Coral Restoration Nursery on Key Largo, FL

This position is primarily to support Mote’s coral restoration activities in Islamorada and Key Largo, including coral husbandry duties associated with Mote’s land-based coral nurseries, outplanting of corals to offshore restoration sites, collaborating and liaising with local partners, field monitoring, construction and maintenance of infrastructure and equipment associated with those tasks, data entry/management, deliverables oversight, coral restoration research and report writing.

Primary Duties:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations at Mote’s Coral Nursery on Islamorada and Key Largo
  • Conduct extensive coral nursery and coral husbandry work and support services
  • Manage full and part-time staff within land-based nursery
  • Field work involving vessel operations and SCUBA diving
  • Underwater data collection
  • Routine maintenance of coral nursery infrastructure and water quality/coral health equipment
  • Oversee appropriate water quality conditions within the land-based coral nurseries
  • Outreach and Education duties as needed associated with Mote’s Coral Restoration Program

Additional duties will include assisting with various tasks related to the daily operation of a full service marine laboratory, assist with field and lab support to visiting scientists, and assist with outreach and education activities as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in the marine or biological sciences from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum SCUBA certification of Rescue Diver (Divemaster preferred).
  • Meet and maintain AAUS Scientific Diver standards, including medical requirements.
  • Ability to work on the water in inclement/marginal weather conditions
  • Participate in heavy physical exertion while swimming, diving, or hauling gear
  • Lift heavy objects or equipment up to 50 lbs
  • Valid license to drive in the State of Florida.
  • Ability to be an adaptable and collegial team member, self-motivated, and completes assigned tasks in a timely manner.

Working hours: Normal hours are 8:00-5:00 M-F; however, weekend and evening hours may be required at times.
