Ocean Career: Environmental Learning Center Senior Aquarist

Responsible for the maintenance of all aquaria displays, including a 1,500 gallon brackish system consisting of four display tanks and an additional 200 gallon touch tank, along with other various tanks.

Primary Duties:

  • Performs general daily husbandry functions including the maintenance of live exhibits, holding systems and quarantine facilities at a high level of quality with minimal supervision
  • Monitors animal health and make recommendations for improved care as needed
  • Collects and document new organisms as needed
  • Maintains water quality within approved parameters
  • Performs daily cleaning of the aquariums, display surfaces and furniture
  • Maintain all mechanical aquarium systems, including pumps, filters, and lighting
  • Maintain appropriate quarantine procedures as needed
  • Create and implement plan (with Marketing) for tank displays and interpretive signage
  • Works with education staff regarding aquaria needs in addition to positive educational and interactive experiences for guests
  • Ensures proper health and protection of aquaria species
  • Prepare food and feed the species, according to proper schedules
  • All other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Science or related field or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of lagoon related species including care, feeding and maintaining their habitats
  • Knowledge of habitat requirements, including life support systems and water quality parameters for aquatic/marine species
  • Experience with maintenance and upkeep of salt/brackish water systems including life support system, filters, and care of marine species is required
  • Experience creating and maintaining a backup system to ensure continuous proper conditions of the aquaria during emergency situations
  • Experience creating and ensuring quality of displays and messaging for guests

Compensation: $40,000 - $50,000 annual salary based on experience. Room for growth.
