Ocean Career: Field Researcher at Scripps Institution of Oceanography

Under direct guidance, responsible for deploying, operating, and maintaining field equipment to conduct topographic coastal surveys and in-situ sensors. Supports research projects that rely on field observations by assisting with program planning and logistical issues.

Work with senior staff to coordinate research activities and operation of instrumentation. Applies various software packages, geographic information systems (GIS), programming languages, and established procedures to support field research projects.

Process, perform quality control, archive, and analyze point cloud coastal topographic data and other oceanographic data to create plots and figures for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations. Assist experienced staff to collect GPS, LiDAR, and drone-based coastal surveys and maintain field and laboratory equipment. Study documentation, logs and reports, keeping current with the latest technologies and research advances. Support team to establish procedures and assist with the development of research protocols.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of research discipline, principles, concepts, analysis and / or operations being conducted at field / remote sites.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate 4x4 vehicle in sandy and off road environments, and experience with towing. A valid driver's license. Ability to drive in a safe manner.
  • Proficient ability to use of GIS software, word processing (e.g. Word or Google Docs), spreadsheets (e.g. Excel or Sheets), and presentation packages and ability to update ad increase skills and knowledge as needed.
  • Experience processing and analyzing point cloud and topographic data.
  • Strong research and analytical skills. Experience analyzing and imaging environmental data. Experience documenting analysis and results through reports, manuscripts, or publications.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the group. Ability to interact using tact and diplomacy with diverse personalities including academics, staff, students, and volunteers. Ability to work in a collaborative manner.
  • Demonstrates ability to work in ambiguous conditions. Ability and experience working outdoors, driving trucks, and operating all-terrain-vehicles.
  • Ability to work with a team, and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision. Self motivated, independent, able to learn quickly, and demonstrate problem solving skills. Possesses the ability to follow through with assigned tasks until completed.
  • Some experience establishing procedures, developing protocols, and coordinating research logistics.
  • Working knowledge of safety, legal, cultural and regulatory requirements relative to field research responsibility.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships with remote research partners.
  • Working knowledge of local customs and operations at field / remote sites.
  • Some experience with literature review, study documentation, logs, and reports.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. Skill to communicate clearly, effectively, tactfully, and patiently in person, on the telephone, and in writing. Ability to present a positive impression in person, on the telephone, and through writing.
  • Must be able to move heavy instruments, equipment, and supplies.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
  • Position is subject to a DMV check for driving record and valid driver's license.
  • Must be willing to work overtime; occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
  • Ability to pass the ATV Safety Institute Rider Course.
  • Position will involve some physical labor for both field work and everyday tasks.

Salary: $43,900 - $67,900 /year
Work Schedule: Full-time
