Ocean Career: Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute Marine Science Education/Outreach Manager

The Education and Outreach Manager will work under the direction of the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute Chief Science Officer to lead the development of education and outreach initiatives for the Institute.

A primary focus for this position is managing our growing Seabass in the Classroom (SITC) program, which currently involves multiple schools (middle schools, high schools, and junior colleges) in Southern California. Through this program, students rear juvenile seabass in their classrooms and release them into the ocean—integrating STEM education into an existing large experimental ocean conservation program. In addition, this position will work closely with our scientists and researchers to effectively translate HSWRI's research into accessible educational materials and communication initiatives. The Manager will serve an integral role interfacing with HSWRI scientists and our development team to facilitate fundraising, outreach, and student opportunities across HSWRI research programs.

Primary Duties:

  • Manage all aspects of the SITC program, including fish deliveries, tagging, coordinating health inspections, and releases; maintain accurate records and documentation
  • Collaborate with educators to develop a comprehensive Next Generation Science Standard (NGSS)-aligned SITC curriculum for grades 9–12
  • Help establish new SITC schools as resources allow
  • Serve as a lead for SITC programmatic planning and assessment of impact and success
  • Serve as a lead for HSWRI outreach, including representing HSWRI at public events and conferences; leading facility tours, generating and posting social media materials, etc.
  • Develop science communication strategies to effectively convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences, promoting scientific literacy and public understanding of our work
  • Develop education and outreach partnerships with local schools, community organizations, scientific institutions, and SeaWorld Parks
  • Work with HSWRI Development team to engage with donors and contribute to fundraising efforts
  • Qualifications/Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • M.S. in marine science, science education, or a related STEM field is highly desirable. Candidates with a B.S. in Marine Biology, Education, or a related discipline with relevant experience may also be considered.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in education program development, coordination, and public outreach. Experience as an educator and curriculum development based on NGSS is required. Experience in managing similar programs like SITC or working with school-level STEM education would be an added advantage. Experience with public engagement and a demonstrated passion for sharing ocean education with others is essential.
  • Demonstrated understanding of marine science and current global issues affecting ocean health. Knowledge of marine biology, preferably including aquaculture and/or aquarium systems, is necessary. Proficiency in translating complex scientific concepts into accessible educational materials. Competency with various social media platforms is desirable.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Excellent organizational skills
  • Mobility to work in a hatchery building and outdoor setting, to use standard laboratory equipment, to use a computer, and to travel to various sites within and away from southern California, including occasional overnight stays. Ability to lift 50 lbs. with accommodation. Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone with accommodation.
  • Possession of a valid driving license and insurability to drive a HSWRI vehicle
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings as required
  • Commitment to support a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment where all staff, volunteers, and guests are respected and valued
  • Employment is contingent on successful engagement in the HSWRI COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral)
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
