Ocean Career: Kelp Restoration Program Manager at Reef Check Worldwide

The Reef Check Foundation seeks a Program Manager for its kelp restoration projects in central and northern California. This is a full-time leadership position based in central California working remotely from a home office. Some field work and travel within California will be required.

Reef Check is exploring kelp restoration using different methods to reduce purple urchin populations and promote kelp growth. Our sites were chosen for restoration because they show potential for kelp recovery and they are of particular interest to local communities. The Restoration Program Manager will lead all aspects of the restoration program and work with recreational and commercial divers, state and government agencies, tribal and non-profit partners to coordinate and direct Reef Check’s restoration projects. This position will oversee the regional restoration work as well as develop a cohesive strategy for all restoration activities. The Program Manager will report to and work in close collaboration with Reef Check’s Executive Director. Compensation will depend on qualifications and experience. Primary Responsibilities

  • Coordinate Reef Check restoration projects in California
  • Expand restoration activities to new sites
  • Assist with program development and support fundraising strategy
  • Lead regional staff in restoration work
  • Develop budgets and reports for restoration project
  • Communicate with stakeholders and management agencies

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in marine biology, ecology, environmental science or related fields
  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience in habitat restoration and/or marine conservation is preferred
  • Ability to design and oversee field projects, supervise and train staff, and work with partners to implement projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines, set and maintain project timelines
  • AAUS certification or leadership dive certification is a plus
