Ocean Career: Marine Macroinvertebrate Taxonomist at TRC

Our Environmental Sector delivers comprehensive environmental solutions to meet the full project lifecycle needs of clients in renewable energy, oil & gas, transportation, and manufacturing industries. With one of the largest multimedia air and land permitting and compliance teams in the country, we support client success in manufacturing and industry, liquids delivery and processing, natural gas storage and delivery, power generation and delivery, and transportation projects.

TRC is seeking a full-time Marine Macroinvertebrate Taxonomist to report to our Waltham, MA or East Providence, RI offices.

POSITION SUMMARY

TRC is a national environmental, engineering consulting and construction management firm that provides integrated services to the energy, environmental and infrastructure markets. TRC serves a broad range of clients in government and industry, implementing complex projects from initial concept to delivery and operation.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, those listed below:

  • Identify marine benthic macroinvertebrates from samples collected in coastal and offshore areas of the eastern United States.
  • Collect or oversee collection of benthic macrofaunal and sediment samples from coastal and offshore environments.
  • Use imagery, acoustic data, and physical sample results to classify benthic habitats.
  • Compile and analyze data, write reports and other technical documents.
  • Other tasks, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in zoology, marine biology, biology, or similar focus.
  • 2+ years of direct marine macroinvertebrate taxonomy experience.
  • Experienced with the use of compound and dissecting microscopes and taxonomic keys.
  • Excellent attention to detail and communication skills.
  • Able to work at sea for multiple days at a time as part of a benthic survey or other marine data collection program.
  • Proficiency with standard office productivity software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat).

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in relevant field.
  • Specific experience with identification of marine invertebrates from soft sediment benthic habitats.
  • Taxonomic proficiency with other organisms (e.g., aquatic macroinvertebrates, algae) or other geographic areas (e.g., Pacific coast).
  • Proficiency with statistical analyses.
