Ocean Career: MBA Data Manager

The MBA Data Team has an international reputation for innovative, standards-based data management solutions. As part of working with the UK marine community, the Data Team operates DASSH, the UK Archive for Marine Species and Habitats Data and UK Node for the Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS), responsible for the publication of over 5 million marine species and biotope records.

DASSH has a range of roles, partnerships, and projects with organizations all over the world in a bid to create a complete and full picture of the ocean’s species and biotopes; an essential resource for policy development and advising decision makers on marine conservation priorities.

The role

As our new Data Manager, you will work with the Head of Data, Information & Technology to deliver DASSH and OBIS-UK, provide data management advice, services and support to the UK marine community and lead on data-related elements for externally funded contracts across the UK and Europe. You will have day to day responsibility for the management of the DASSH archive, including liaison with data providers. You will have a track record of securing funding and supervising staff, be able to manage multiple, conflicting deadlines and be confident in your presentation and public speaking skills.

Essential Experience

  • Management of biological databases
  • Advanced use of database and spreadsheet applications
  • High attention to detail
  • Supervision of technical staff
  • Ability to work independently and to tight deadlines
  • Applicable undergraduate qualification such as Marine Biology/Data Science degree
  • Line Management experience

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary will be based on experience
  • The MBA will contribute 10% of your basic salary into a defined benefits pension scheme. You are required to make a 3% minimum contribution. You can contribute over the 3% minimum and the MBA will match up to a maximum of 5%
  • Annual Leave allowance is 30 days plus bank holidays/privilege days (pro-rata if part time)
  • Potential for some flexible working
