Ocean Career: Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission Quantitative Ecologist

The Norwest Indian Fisheries Commission (NWIFC) is seeking a Quantitative Ecologist to join their team.

The NWIFC Quantitative Ecologist will work to develop measurable, empirical understanding and correlation of habitat conditions and ecosystem productivity. Position focus will be to build and engage tools designed to evaluate habitat conditions, enable predictive modeling and forecasting to inform decision making that optimizes net gain in ecosystem function and productivity. Application will be both region-wide and watershed specific to support current and future tribal resource protection objectives, projects, and management efforts.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in mathematics, Statistics, Quantitative Ecology, or Quantitative Fisheries.
  • Three years of pertinent work experience.
  • Knowledge of application of statistical methods to environmental conditions, eco-system services and/or resource management.
  • Experience and understanding of quantitative theory and its application to study design, and field sampling methodology
  • Experience and expertise using the R programming language
  • Knowledge of the life histories of Pacific salmon
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to work with people of various racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively at all levels within an organization
  • Ability to consistently apply sound professional judgment and critical thinking to address complex issues, solve immediate problems, and maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proficiency with personal computing environment, Microsoft Office Suite, ArcGIS and GPS systems
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License.
