Ocean Career: Ocean Field Manager at Open Ocean Robotics

We’re on a quest to find a Field Manager to manage our field operations in solar-powered autonomous boats, also called uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs), including planning and executing deployments and collecting oceanographic data.

Core Responsibilities

  • Managing USV deployments including planning, execution and logistics
  • Operating the USV, including transportation, deployment, retrieval and mission control
  • Operating the crewed support boat and ensuring adherence to safety protocols
  • Writing detailed field and project reports
  • Leading the field team and training new staff
  • Obtaining the necessary approvals and coordinating with local authorities including Transport Canada, Coast Guard, etc.
  • Collection, validation and analysis of oceanographic data

Requirements

  • Degree in Environmental Sciences, Ocean Sciences, Marine Biology, or similar
  • Valid Driver’s licence
  • Valid passport
  • Demonstrated experience in maritime field work, preferably with remotely operated technologies (5+ years or equivalent)
  • Understanding of oceanographic data collection and scientific field operations an asset
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate scientific information in a clear and understandable manner
  • Adaptable and enthusiastic about a start-up environment which includes wearing multiple hats, implementing new systems and striving for a shared goal
  • Strong organizational, planning, and prioritization skills
  • Willing to obtain:
    • Boat operator training course, SVOP (Small Vessel Operator Proficiency) or higher
    • Radio Restricted Operator Certificate
    • First Aid Certificate
    • MEDA Certification
