Ocean Career: Research Scientist at Macro Oceans

Macro Oceans is looking for a top-notch Research Scientist to help build our analytical chemistry pipeline. Your bench will be at AgStart, a state-of-the-art co-working space in Woodland, CA, very close to Davis and Sacramento.

As a research scientist, your responsibilities will be:

  • Prepare and analyze the samples from processed seaweed to provide qualitative and quantitative information on compounds of interest
  • Use analytical techniques and instrumentation to investigate the compounds and their compositions including development of analytical methods where necessary
  • Review, interpret and analyze data to evaluate the experiments and improve our biorefinery process and products
  • Validate new analytical methods and equipment
  • Lead our analytics partnerships with third party labs including the Lawrence Berkeley Lab

Your Technical Qualifications

  • Masters or PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry or another relevant field
  • Good working knowledge and practical experience of wet-lab (bio)chemistry
  • Experience with the extraction, separation, purification, chromatography, and characterization of biomass constituents including carbohydrates (polysaccharides, oligosaccharides, and simple sugar monomers), lipids and fatty acids, proteins and amino acids, ash, minerals, and moisture content
  • Experience in using different analytical techniques and equipment such as HPLC, LC/GC-MS, spectrophotometry, UV-Vis, IR, ICP-MS
  • Knowledge of statistical data analysis and visualization
  • 2+ years of relevant experience working in industry / startup

Awesome if you have these too

  • Knowledge of programming languages / packages such as Python, MATLAB, R
  • Carbohydrates separation and purification techniques such as chromatography
  • Experience with micro / macro algae biomass conversion
  • Startup experience
