Ocean Career: Research Scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science

This position will ensure the further development and growth of the Marine Megafauna team by assisting with the delivery of contracted and new research on marine megafauna special ecology. Working in this exciting research area, you will be working to:

  • Collect new data as well as undertake synthesis of existing data for the development and application of statistical approaches and models that describe and predict the distribution and movement behaviour of a range of marine megafauna
  • Oversee all aspects of pre-trip planning, mobilisation of equipment and consumables, as well as subsequent de-mobilisation
  • Participate in and lead managing field teams during extended voyages at sea or shore-based trips for a broad range of projects
  • Build strong partnerships with stakeholders by working closely with end users of research outputs, who include Government, Industry and Traditional Owners
  • Publish and promote research activities and outputs

This opportunity will suit someone looking to contribute to the research portfolio of the Marine Megafauna Group, but also to develop their own research portfolio through collaborations and proposals to research end users and other funders such as Industry, Government, Traditional Owners, Philanthropy.

  • AIMS AOF Level 5 salary ($109,976 to $120,564 per annum) plus 15.4% superannuation

  2. It is a requirement of this role that you are and remain fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Please note the sighting of proof of vaccination will be required as a pre commencement requirement.

About you

You will be PhD qualified and be well known for your academic achievements and research outputs in this field. Your postdoctoral experience in the analysis and management of marine megafauna movement, environmental and threat data including data synthesis will compliment your experience in collecting and analysing such spatial data using advanced quantitative and analytical approaches.

A strong communicator, you’ll be experienced building strong partnerships with stakeholders, external clients and research partners that ensure best outcomes are achieved. And you’ll be experience leading and participating in field work.
