Ocean Career: SCDNR Associate Marine Scientist

The successful candidate will join our Marine Resources Research Institute (MRRI) team to assist ASMFC with South Atlantic stock assessments, but also participate in ASMFC technical committees and conduct state or regional stock assessment for both SCDNR and GADNR.

Specific duties will include leading the development and application of stock assessment models, such as statistical catch at age, data poor, and multispecies models to determine the status of stocks, leading the compilation and analyses of fisheries dependent and independent data for inclusion in stock assessments and other technical analyses, preparing reports and presenting information to species management boards, advisory panels, and other stakeholder groups, attending regional meetings on stock assessment and population dynamic models, providing advice and technical expertise to state fishery biologist, including the development of training workshops, and participating as a member of relevant committees of the Atlantic Coastal Cooperative Statistics Programs. All projects will include work on multi-disciplinary teams.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A Ph.D. in field related to job duties. Writing skills, as evidenced by at least one (1) peer-reviewed publication.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. degree in fisheries science, population dynamics, marine biology, or a closely related field. Applicants should have a quantitative background and strong interest in advanced analytical methods in population dynamics. Experience in the following areas: fisheries stock assessment methods and population modeling; statistical analysis using R or SAS software; data management; technical report writing for fisheries managers; professional writing and public speaking; strong communication and group coordination skills, and the ability to multitask across projects.
