Ocean Career: Scientist at Marine Surveys & Assessments

Marine Surveys & Assessments is looking for an experienced Marine Scientist/Project Coordinator to work on a variety of critical area surveys and reports, including Biological Evaluations, Habitat Management Plans, marine habitat mitigation and monitoring surveys, and other miscellaneous biological reports. In addition to the biological surveys and report writing, the other components of the job are project coordination and marketing.

We are seeking someone who has the organizational abilities to run a multi-component project including but not limited to: excellent communication skills to work with clients and regulatory agencies, develop project timelines, facilitate project budgets, and have the tenacity to follow through with all aspects of a project until completion. Marketing may include basic website editing, social media, research into current RFPs/RFQs, and networking. No prior marketing experience is necessary, but applicants must have a clear communication and writing style and be comfortable networking with all kinds of people.

Responsibilities and Duties Include:

  • Project Coordinator
    • Coordinate with other staff members, subcontractors, clients, and regulatory agencies to schedule and prioritize projects, keep projects running smoothly, manage project budgets, and analyze appropriate steps to follow to complete tasks in a timely manner.
    • Use of organization project management databases such as Gant Charts, Microsoft Excel, and other software products. Follow through with all aspects of a project until completion.
    • Regular communication with supervisor, other staff, clients and agency personnel, with clear timelines and expectations.
    • Holding client/staff conferences as needed or requested.
  • Scientific report writing (i.e. Critical Area and Endangered Species Act reports)
    • Research and write federal/state/county reports such as Biological Evaluations/Assessments, Habitat Management Plans, and No Net Loss reports.
    • Writing should be clear, concise, and up to professional scientific standards without the need for substantive revisions.
    • Peer review of other biologist’s reports on an as-needed basis.
    • Special projects may be assigned as necessary.
  • City, county, state, and federal permit application work

    • Maintaining the integrity of MSA and adhering to safe practices at all times when with clients, staff and agency personnel either on-site or off, thus ensuring safety while in the field and/or when you are the lead staff.
  • Attendance at all pertinent company meetings, as designated by the supervisor.
  • Participation in planning and implementing relevant field visits, conferences, and training.
  • Other projects may include: habitat and ecosystem evaluations, scientific diving (if SCUBA certified), eelgrass delineation, Ordinary High Water Mark (OHWM) determinations, forage fish surveys, shellfish surveys, Marine Mammal and Marbled Murrelet monitoring, GIS mapping and analysis.

Compensation and Benefits:

The compensation for this position is commensurate with experience and expertise.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marine biology, fisheries, chemistry, aquatic toxicology, natural science, or related field OR bachelor’s degree in environmental planning, environmental policy, or related field.
  • Three or more years of experience working in environmental science, with a preference in Marine Biology

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in marine biology, fisheries, chemistry, aquatic toxicology, natural science, or related field OR master’s degree in environmental planning, environmental policy, or related field.
  • Experience working on biological documents related to the marine environment.
  • Experience writing federal Endangered Species Act reports (i.e. Biological Evaluations/Assessments), Habitat Management Plans, and/or No Net Loss reports.
  • Living on the Olympic Peninsula or desire to do so.
  • Experience with RFP/RFQ applications and marketing.
  • Environmental consulting experience.
  • OHWM, Forage Fish, Marbled Murrelet monitor, and/or wetland certifications.
