Ocean Career: Senior Fisheries Analyst at Global Fishing Watch

Global Fishing Watch is dedicated to advancing ocean governance through transparency of human activity at sea.

Our cutting-edge technology turns big data into actionable information and we share it for free to enable scientific research and to drive better management practices to protect biodiversity, fisheries and livelihoods. By 2030, we aim to monitor and visualize the impact of ocean-going vessels, both industrial and small-scale, that are responsible for the vast majority of the global seafood catch.

The Joint Analytical Cell, or JAC, provides authorities with fisheries intelligence, data analysis and capacity building to help combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. Founded by the International Monitoring, Control and Surveillance Network (IMCS Network), Global Fishing Watch (GFW) and TM-Tracking (TMT), the initiative harnesses innovative technology and the complementary expertise of its collaborating organizations to improve the effectiveness of fisheries monitoring, control and surveillance. By fostering cooperation among State and non-State partners, the JAC seeks to build insights and capacity that will help enhance fisheries management.

Work areas the JAC collaboration has identified as a priority:

  • Detect, deter, and eliminate Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing activities;
  • Increase overall transparency of fishing activities at sea;
  • Build the capacity of developing countries to more effectively and efficiently implement and maintain their own fisheries MCS regimes; and
  • Leverage data and technology to inform and support global fisheries policy and governance processes and strengthening.

The Position

The role will also support the development of the JAC, growing the GFW capacity to support the JAC and engaging new strategic JAC partnerships and collaborations.

This will include supporting the generation of intelligence reports, communicating findings to country partners, and actively supporting their fisheries MCS operations. The Senior Analyst will be responsible for working across multiple fisheries monitoring platforms and data processing techniques to deliver the analytical component of the JAC work. Additionally, the role will support the training and capacity building of partners in the use of tools and data available through the JAC. The Sr Analyst will manage 1 analyst and coordinate input to JAC projects from across GFW teams.

The role will require well-developed analytical and data science skills, an understanding of fisheries monitoring, control and surveillance and a willingness to work occasional unusual hours.
