Ocean Career: Stantec Coastal Engineering Specialist

Stantec’s Environmental Services sector is seeking a highly motivated Mid-Level Coastal Engineering Specialist to join our rapidly growing team and deliver projects in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

Preferred locations are Laurel, MD, Charleston, SC, Tampa Bay, FL, Dallas, TX. Other office locations as well as flexible office schedules will be considered for the right candidate. The ideal candidate will have 5-10 years of experience in coastal engineering, port and marine engineering/construction, marine science, or oceanography. Stantec is a leader in the coastal engineering industry with a deep bench of expertise and our dynamic Coastal Engineering Team leads and supports a wide variety of coastal work across the US. Team members are expected to be able to contribute in several areas of coastal engineering and provide support in the following areas:

  • Natural Hazards and Coastal Risk Modeling and Mapping
  • Coastal Hydrodynamics and Morphology
  • Design and Analysis of Coastal Structures, Dredging, and Beach Nourishment Projects
  • Coastal Management, Environmental Restoration, and Shoreline Enhancement
  • Field Measurements, Instrumentation, Remote-Sensing

Your Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities

  • As a Coastal Engineering Specialist, you will be responsible for delivering successful coastal projects and working as part of an integrated team to develop cost effective, practical coastal engineering designs and construction solutions for our clients. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Work in a manner to protect the health and safety of Stantec employees, clients, and the public by following company health, safety and security guidelines and policies.
  • Communicate and apply with a high level of understanding the principles and practices of coastal engineering, coastal hydrodynamics, coastal hazard analysis, wave theory, and sediment transport mechanics.
  • Complete engineering calculations and modeling for the design or analysis of projects located in coastal environments and ecosystem restoration projects.
  • Provide engineering leadership at a project level task and working with other engineering staff to complete projects.
  • Complete tasks assigned by a Senior Coastal Engineer and works with junior engineers to complete engineering studies and design projects.
  • Plan, schedule, conduct or coordinate detailed phases of the coastal engineering work in marine related projects.
  • Remain current on regulatory policy and rule changes relevant to your role(s).
  • Maintain consistently high standards of delivery, quality, flexibility, and innovation.
  • Perform coastal engineering analyses and designs through the application of coastal theory.
  • Organize and interpret engineering data to prepare clear and concise design drawings, engineering reports and technical documentation.
  • Field work responsibilities may include performing project construction observation, interpret contract documents, enforce contract specifications, and review submittals for accuracy, completeness and design consistency.
  • Communicate with co-workers, clients and the public in a professional manner including in a meeting or presentation.
  • Prioritize and accomplish multiple assignments efficiently and effectively with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface effectively and collaborate with clients, peers, management, and vendors to successfully meet shifting needs.
  • Ensure conformance to applicable engineering codes and standards as well as company policies and procedures.
  • Other work activities may include assisting in proposal efforts, preparation of labor/material estimates, design packages and deliverables, documenting technical data for management review and performing other duties as assigned.
