Ocean Career: The Marine Mammal Center Compensation & Compliance Director

The Compensation and Compliance Director (CCD) manages the compensation program for the Marine Mammal Center. With oversight from the Chief People and Culture Officer (CPCO), the CCD, build and maintain all job descriptions train other HR team members on job description creation.

Additionally, the CCD will be responsible for employment compliance for the Center and will monitor all tasks necessary and advise the CPCO when changes need to occur. The CCD will act as the liaison between HR and Finance on all compensation and payroll issues including HR audits, policies, and procedures.

Compensation: 40%

  • Build and manage Compensation Plan, including annual evaluation and update of Salary Table.
  • Conduct the annual review of staff compensation across the Center’s job categories and pay grades and recommend adjustments to ensure parity and equity.
  • Oversee job description process within The Center. (Staff, Volunteers, and Interns)
  • Create and or revise job descriptions and conduct a job analysis to determine compensation grade.
  • Oversee the annual non-profit compensation surveys/inquiries (e.g., Fair Pay).
  • HR oversight of the payroll component within the HRIS (Paylocity).
  • Overall management of the Center’s Time and Labor System (Paylocity).

Recruitment and Staffing: 30%

  • Manage the Center’s Recruitment and Selection Program.
  • Build a staffing plan based on management team decisions to support planned growth.
  • Develop an onboarding and offboarding plan for the Center.
  • Manage the onboarding and orientation program.
  • Manage the Early Career Program.
  • Oversee and review the job description development and analysis.
  • Evaluate job classifications to ensure parity across job levels and compliance with state and federal labor codes.
  • Approve job postings to ensure that they conform to EEO requirements.
  • Facilitate hiring through internal channels and external recruiters.
  • Coordinate or conduct initial screenings of applicants for specific open positions.
  • Negotiate compensation; review and approve offer letters.

HR Policy and Compliance: 15%

  • Review and revise, when necessary, the Employee Handbook, ensuring compliance requirements are met.
  • Administer the Center’s employment policies and recommend appropriate enhancements or changes.
  • Oversee annual HR Audits.
  • Develop and manage the annual Affirmative Action Plan.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal wage and hour law.

Benefits: 05 %

  • Primary back up for the Benefits.
  • Participate in the annual benefits open enrollment process.
  • Co-lead the 401K plan and annual audit.

Employee Relations: 05%

  • Primary backup for Employee Relations issues.
  • Functions as a trusted manager, capable of dealing with employee conflicts, complaints, reports of policy violations, harassment, or other such employee relations issues.
  • Guide and counsel managers dealing with employee performance issues to ensure that all grievances are heard, fully documented, and resolved.

Other Tasks as Assigned: 5%

  • Perform special projects and research as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of human resource management processes and practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of employee relationship processes and practices.
  • Current knowledge of state and federal employment regulations and compliance best practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of payroll administration procedures and best practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal payroll regulations and compliance practices.
  • Strong knowledge of managing and reporting on HRIS for payroll, benefits, HR, onboarding, and applicant tracking.
  • Knowledge of benefits administration including medical, dental, vision, life, LTC, STD, LTD, FSA, EAP, and 401(k).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Office Suite).
  • Ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks and responsibilities, and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to support and participate in the Center’s diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, initiatives, and trainings.
