Ocean Career: UC Davis Assistant Dive & Boating Safety Officer

Reporting to the UC Davis Dive and Boating Safety Officers (BSO) & (DSO), the Asst Dive & Boating Safety Officer assists with the development, coordination, implementation and analysis of campus-wide boating and diving safety programs.

Helps to conduct campus-wide boating and diving-related training courses and helps ensure all vessels and operators/crew of vessels, SCUBA divers performing research under UC Davis auspices meeting federal, state, and UC Davis boating and diving safety requirements and guidelines. It is UC Davis’ intention and the mission of the DCB to maintain the highest possible level of safety excellence in the boating & dive program.

Minimum Qualifications

Additional Minimum License/Certification:

  • Possess MOTC/MOCC Instructor Certification or able to complete within 1 year from date of hire.

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Experience operating small boats (up to 50-ton displacement) in offshore, coastal and/or Bay-Delta waters, lakes, and rivers. Hold current, or have ability to obtain, open water, UCD/AAUS scientific diver authorization and diving leader status from a nationally recognized SCUBA training agency (ex: PADI, NAUI).
  • Experience to act as crew, or small vessel operator in support of UCD/BML marine operations. Experience using boat equipment, such as winches, davits, electronics, safety gear, and towing vehicles with boat trailers.
  • Experience to evaluate and safely solve problems under hazardous weather and sea conditions, and/or in a confined space against deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional Preferred License/Certification:

Hold current, or have ability to obtain, certifications for first aid, CPR/AED and emergency oxygen delivery from a national agency (American Heart Association, American Safety & Heath Institute, National Safety Council, Red Cross, Diver’s Alert Network, etc.).

Preferred Education/Experience:

Experience to perform safety inspections of vessels and SCUBA diving equipment.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Skill to instruct others in use of marine electronics (fathometer, GPS, radar, VHF communications, dive computers, SCUBA cylinder analysis, nautical charts, vessel logs, weather maps, fill station compressor, air/nitrox tables, and other documents and instrumentation.
  • Skills to manage, organize, lead, and document training courses; keep accurate records, compile detailed reports.
  • Posses knowledge of state and federal laws and requirements for boating and diving operations, and multiple agency regulations applicable to vessel operations and SCUBA diving activities.
  • Possess excellent oral and writing communication skills, with computer proficiency.
  • Ability to apply tact, sound judgment and consistency in administering and enforcing all policies and procedures.
  • Ability to function effectively with diverse groups as a committee member or advisor/consultant.
