Postdoctoral Fellowship at Mote’s Ecotoxicology Research Program

Mote Marine Laboratory is celebrating its 67th anniversary as a unique, independent, non-profit international marine research facility with 26 diverse research programs, an impactful array of K-12 and undergraduate STEM education/outreach programs, including the NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates and one of seven NSF-sponsored Louis Stokes Alliance Minority Participation Centers of Excellence), and a public aquarium featuring working laboratories and more than 100 marine species.

Mote currently has a staff of over 260 members (including 40 PhD-level) and 1500 volunteers at its main campus in Sarasota Florida, along with five additional campuses/facilities including a state-of-the-art 200 acre marine and freshwater aquaculture research park, a 19,000 square foot International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration near Key West, a new coral restoration nursery in Islamorada, and work is underway on a new over 100,000 square foot Science Education Aquarium in Sarasota. The Mote scientific expertise is considerable and diverse, and is augmented by approximately 150 non-resident scientists from over 100 different U.S. and international institutions who are involved in projects with Mote.

Mote’s Ecotoxicology Research Program is seeking a Postdoctoral research fellow to join a diverse team of marine scientists investigating synergistic effects from exposure to multiple stressors, including natural biotoxins (HABs), toxic organic pollutants (pesticides, pharmaceuticals and other endocrine disrupting compounds) in association with anthropogenic stressors and climate change. Current projects address investigations into the source, fate and effects of toxic substances in the coastal marine environment, including effects of endocrine disrupting compounds on coral reef communities, bioaccumulation, trophic transfer and persistence of natural biotoxins in water, air and organisms. The Postdoctoral Fellow will participate in the design and testing of innovative technologies for in situ detection of biotoxins, and for mitigating adverse effects from harmful algal blooms, working with colleagues and stakeholders to assess and reduce risk to marine life and public health.

The Fellowship requires USA citizenship, proficiency in analytical chemistry, laboratory techniques for analysis of toxic organic chemicals and biomarkers of effect. Experience with design and implementation of environmental sample collection and processing protocol, as well as controlled laboratory toxicity studies and a command of statistical analysis. Experience with risk assessment is highly desirable. The position requires the ability to work as part of a team, as well as innovative, independent research. A record of peer reviewed manuscripts is a plus. The position also affords the opportunity for hosting visiting scientists, interactions with scientists from multiple disciplines at Mote, oversight of student interns and volunteers, and to serve as Courtesy Faculty, mentoring graduate research with various universities.

Expected to begin before end of 2022, continuing for up to three years, with appropriate progress and the intended option to transition to a Mote Staff Scientist. The full-time Fellowship includes a competitive annual salary with annual merit raises. Partially-subsidized health insurance is also provided, with family options available.
