Schmidt Ocean Institute Data Internship

Schmidt Ocean Institute’s Data Internship aims to provide educational and practical support to graduate students studying mathematics, computer science, oceanography, or related fields.

The intern will assist with a variety of strategic data initiatives, contributing to Schmidt Ocean Institute’s goals to increase the open sharing of data. The student intern will work closely with our Data Team as well as across the organization in supporting science and data programs, with an overall focus on increasing the accessibility of data collected aboard SOI’s research vessel. This is a paid internship position. Interviewing will take place at the end of April/early May. This year-long internship would begin in summer 2022.

Responsibilities

  • Quality Assurance/ Quality Control projects
  • Literature review and knowledge compilation on data sharing practices
  • User Experience/User Interface development for data accessibility and visualization projects
  • Joint projects communicating data challenges and best practices to technical/non-technical audience
  • Participants may have the opportunity to use software or data platforms such as collaborative version control, dashboarding software, databases, cloud computing, etc.

Requirements

  • Must currently be enrolled as a Graduate Student, majoring in data science, computer science, oceanography, earth science, mathematics, or related fields
  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 15 hours of work a week
  • Previous experience and/or coursework in statistics or data analysis
  • Interest in oceanography, technology, and ocean exploration
  • Ability to learn new software
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States or Canada
  • Available for remote interview end of April/early May

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge and experience with Cloud Computing (Google Cloud or similar)
  • Knowledge and experience with programming languages (python, javascript, R, Matlab or similar)
  • Time management skills
  • The ability to work with a team, as well as alone (sometimes with minimal guidance)
