Ocean Career: UGAMI Research Technician

Chartered by the state of Georgia in 1785, the University of Georgia is the birthplace of public higher education in America and is the state’s flagship university. The UGA Marine Institute on Sapelo Island (UGAMI) is a world-renowned field destination that supports research and education in coastal ecosystems. The Marine Institute is located on Sapelo Island, GA, accessible only via ferry or boat.

Position Summary

This position is based at the UGA Marine Institute on Sapelo Island, GA. The selected individual will serve as a field technician for the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research Program and will work with other technicians. P-card responsibilities.

Help implement all routine monitoring programs associated with the project, including:

  • 50%
    • Monitoring plant and invertebrate populations, water chemistry, sediment dynamics, and climate.
    • Maintaining monitoring instruments.
    • Computer data entry.
    • Downloading and transmitting instrument data to GCE personnel.
  • 20%
    • Operate a small boat (currently use 16’ and 22’ boats) to transport personnel and equipment to field sites in estuaries and marshes on the Georgia Coast.
  • 20%
    • Assist GCE Personnel with field research.
    • Attend annual GCE meetings.
  • 10%
    • Assist in processing samples in laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer a Bachelor’s Degree and significant field experience, knowledge of water quality monitoring, and GIS work, including drone piloting and land surveying.

Salary range: $35,200 minimum
