As AIMS’ Experimental Scientist (Coral–Algal Symbiosis and Adaptation) you will contribute to and/or lead research within the Reef Recovery, Adaptation and Restoration Program. You will support the AIMS vision of thriving oceans through trusted science and innovation.
This role will make significant contributions to laboratory, aquarium, and field experiments that develop and apply algal symbiont cultures with a goal of enhancing coral fitness, this is achieved by applying expertise in organismal husbandry, phenotypic analysis, genetics/genomics and other omics approaches.
About you
You will hold a PhD or MSc/Honours plus equivalent experience in a relevant discipline, preferably in ecology, marine biology or microbial ecology and bring a demonstrated track record of scientific achievements, including publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Your demonstrated experience in the culturing and handling of animals and microalgae and/or other unicellular organisms coupled with your experience in genetics/genomics and your ability to communicate scientific results to industry, government, or other stakeholders will see you succeed in this role.
Our ideal candidate will hold a Queensland RMDL Boating License and Short-range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (Marine Radio) and have the ability to meet AIMS fieldwork requirements for snorkelling or SCUBA diving (e.g., PADI Rescue Diver or equivalent and 30h of diving).
Key Selection Criteria
Essential
- PhD in a relevant discipline, preferably in ecology, marine biology or microbial ecology and a demonstrated track record of scientific achievements, including publications in peer-reviewed journals; or a MSc/Hons complemented by considerable relevant research experience.
- Demonstrable experience in the culturing and handling of animals and microalgae and/or other unicellular organisms.
- Demonstrable experience in molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, DNA sequencing library preparation.
- Demonstrated strong organisational skills, adaptability, and the ability to remain calm and effective under pressure, working both independently and collaboratively in fast-paced environments, with the capability and motivation to confidently lead small teams delivering laboratory and aquarium experiments and field trips, including to remote locations.
- Experience communicating scientific results to industry, government, or other stakeholders, translating research findings into accessible and actionable information through the synthesis of scientific data, and demonstrating the ability to write and edit high-quality scientific reports and publications with precision.

Salary range: AUD $104,291 to $114,730 per annum
