Ocean Career: AIMS Pilot Deployment Program Project Engineer

AIMS Logo & Australian Government
The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is a world leader in tropical marine research, expanding our nation’s knowledge hidden below the surface. From Ningaloo in the west, across the Top End to the Great Barrier Reef, AIMS’ researchers understand large-scale, complex, and emerging challenges in iconic marine habitats in Australia’s vast and remote tropical waters. As a trusted name in marine science we look to Australia’s future needs and build upon our existing capabilities and knowledge to support thriving oceans.

About Data Science & Research Services Program’s Technology Development Team

AIMS is on a journey of technology transformation to equip our researchers to provide the knowledge needed to empower our decision makers. We are looking beyond traditional marine science to world-leading space and data technologists, next-generation sensors, artificial intelligence, machine-learning, robotics and autonomous systems. The Technology Development Team consists of engineering, technician and project management staff working across numerous hardware, software and systems projects.

About this opportunity

This position provides a crucial link between technology development and operations in meeting the objectives of the fast-scaling reef restoration program. You will support the transition of reef restoration interventions from the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program (RRAP) into the Pilot Deployments Program (PDP). Working with the Principal Systems Engineer, technology developers and key multi-institutional researchers, in this role you will also develop knowledge and models that will enable the at-scale deployment of research methods and technologies developed in RRAP.

Key responsibilities of this role include:

  • providing systems engineering oversight and engineering integration expertise;
  • project management of the PDP to assess progress of key projects with a focus on progress in engineering development aspects of projects; and
  • developing and assessing the feasibility of projects that can assist in the deployment of young corals onto coral reefs.

About you

An experienced engineer, you will have a tertiary qualification in a relevant engineering discipline to support your knowledge and experience in integrating technologies into systems and processes, engineering optioneering, feasibility assessments, and planning for manufacturing. You will be a team player, an effective communicator, have strong attention to detail and be able to manage competing priorities whilst maintaining a positive, solutions oriented approach. Highly developed conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills that demonstrate experience working under limited supervision and in a complex environment.
