Ocean Career: APEM Senior Marine Surveyor

Are you an experienced marine surveyor looking to step into a role with more leadership and variety? Do you thrive on complex, high-impact projects—balancing time at sea with technical delivery and mentoring others? Want to work in a team that’s shaping the future of marine science across the UK and beyond?

We’re looking for a Senior Marine Surveyor to join APEM’s Marine BioLabs & Surveys Division — a team recognized for delivering benchmark-quality data and insight across all aquatic habitats, from estuaries to offshore environments.

In this role, you’ll combine technical expertise with team leadership and project delivery. You’ll lead field surveys, manage project budgets and client relationships, and help train and mentor the next generation of marine scientists. You’ll also contribute to developing our marine survey services, supporting multi-disciplinary projects across the UK, Europe and Australia.

This is a fantastic opportunity to take on more responsibility, grow your technical and managerial experience, and help deliver world-class marine survey work with one of the industry’s most respected consultancies.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • A degree in a relevant marine or environmental discipline
  • 5+ years’ experience in the commercial marine survey sector
  • Strong project management skills and a solid understanding of offshore survey H&S
  • Experience leading complex marine survey projects from design to reporting
  • Confidence using DDV and geophysical data interpretation tools, plus GIS proficiency
  • Willingness to work offshore (up to 120 days per year)
  • Valid UK driving license

It’s a real plus if you have:

  • Current offshore survey and medical certifications
  • Experience with marine mammal observation or passive acoustic monitoring
  • Background in global environmental surveys
  • Hands-on experience with marine survey equipment setup, calibration and troubleshooting
  • Macrobenthic sample or DDV analysis experience
  • Knowledge of UK marine consenting processes, or equivalent frameworks internationally
  • Category BE towing license
