The Running Tide Nursery System is focused on the growth and husbandry of shellfish coming out of the Hatchery. As an Aquaculture Systems Engineer on this team, you will report to the Nursery Manager and be expected to coordinate with all adjacent personnel, teams, and capabilities in order to maximize the effectiveness of the Nursery team and systems. The responsibilities of this role will span from equipment operation, engineering design, fabrication and installation of systems, tracking shellfish biology with an emphasis on data collection and analysis. The handling and processing systems the company has developed target scalability and automation to enable large scale coastal restoration and healthy protein production.
In this role, you will be responsible for working on-site directly with the shellfish and systems in development, generating design input based on real-world use cases, installation of new systems on-site, and participating in data collection efforts to correlate system and biological performance. You will also be asked to contribute to our growing knowledge base on husbandry best practices for emerging species in our systems.
You Will:
- Work on-site (Brunswick, Maine) with shellfish processing and handling equipment in order to generate bug lists and inform design iteration
- Collect, record, and distribute data on shellfish biology metrics, inventory, environmental parameters, and system functionality to generate a complete picture of Nursery performance
- Provide leadership and guidance to all on the Nursery Team with respect to shellfish handling and processing best practices
- Execute and refine Nursery grading schedules to optimize shellfish growth and health
- Track and project shellfish growth in the Nursery system ensuring conditions are set for a seamless transition from the hatchery to the Grow-Out team
- Assist with routine cleaning and operation of aquaculture systems
- Execute all steps of a project from design to installation and maintenance
- Coordinate internal resources and external vendors for the execution of all assigned projects
- Forecast and communicate engineering support requirements, ensuring requests are properly routed
- Forecast and communicate fabrication needs for repairs and system component upgrades
- Manage maintenance issues with gear and equipment, pulling in additional support as needed

- Develop understanding of Nursery process to ensure proper prioritization of tasks
- Strong communication and data collection/management skills
- Able to lift 50 lbs. repeatedly and work on your feet in a physically challenging environment
- At least 2 years of experience in the aquaculture industry
Bonus:
- Degree/coursework in aquaculture, engineering, marine biology, or related field
- Mechanical experience/aptitude (operating/repairing mechanical systems, use of basic tools, etc.)
- Experienced operator of small boats and working on the water
- 3-5 years of experience in aquaculture
