Ocean Career: Associate Professor of Marine Biology at Goshen College

Goshen College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Marine Biology. Primary teaching responsibilities will support our major in Environmental and Marine Science.

Teaching load could include Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, Invertebrate Zoology, and/or Oceanography, in addition to courses in the candidate’s area of specialty and/or the Goshen College general education program.

The majority of teaching takes place at the college’s J.N. Roth Marine Biology station (located in the Florida Keys) as part of the college’s Marine Biology Semester. During this residential semester at our station, students complete two field courses, an internship, and work on their senior thesis research. Serving as the Program Director of the J.N. Roth station, the successful candidate will recruit students and develop field-based research projects suitable for undergraduates.

Salary for this position will range from $53,000-71,000 based on education level and experience. In addition to this salary, when teaching the fall marine biology semester in the Keys, housing near our station will be provided. The successful candidate can also choose to live in the Keys all year, for which the college would also provide a housing allowance.

We seek a colleague with exceptional teaching skills and a commitment to mentoring students via an undergraduate research program. Our Environmental & Marine Science alumni consistently gain admittance into Ph.D. and graduate programs in ecology and marine biology. Goshen College ranks second in Indiana in the percent of alumni – per capita – who go on to earn a PhD. In addition to the marine biology station in the Florida Keys, campus facilities include excellent on-campus laboratories for teaching and research and a 1,189 acre field station (Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center) 30 miles from campus. Goshen College faculty are also eligible to apply to teach in our nationally ranked study abroad program, which includes semesters in Ecuador, Tanzania, China, Indonesia, and Senegal.

The Biology department offers bachelor of arts degrees in Biology, Molecular Biology/Biochemistry, and Environmental and Marine Science. A minor is offered in Environmental Studies. All teaching faculty serve on institution-wide committees and assist with advising, as well as recruiting prospective students. The successful candidate must be ready to contribute to our strong tradition of excellence in research and publication as well as teaching. Candidates must be interested in working closely with students and fellow faculty members as a part of a small, vibrant campus and community.
