Ocean Career: Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission Fisheries Biologist

Working directly with the NJ Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Bureau of Marine Fisheries (BMF), the Fisheries Biologist will be responsible for achieving the priorities and objectives established in a federally funded project proposal, including coordinating with state and regional partners; outreach and education; contributing to reviews of internal and external documentation regarding threatened and endangered species; and providing technical support to marine mammal research projects and other regional initiatives. The position is based in southern New Jersey but will require interaction and collaboration with partners throughout the New England and MidAtlantic region.

Duties

1. Coordinate with state, federal, and regional partners engaged in marine mammal research and management;

2. Represent NJ interests on interjurisdictional technical and advisory committees, such as marine mammal Take Reduction Teams;

3. Serve as a point of contact for NJ’s commercial and recreational fishing sectors and general public regarding marine mammal outreach and education;

4. Provide logistical and technical support to one or more passive acoustic monitoring projects for marine mammals off the Mid-Atlantic region;

5. Database management for the acoustic monitoring data and other marine mammal data sources;

6. Environmental review of state and federal permit applications to evaluate potential impacts to marine mammal populations;

7. Other relevant tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in one of the Biological Sciences, Natural Resource Management, or Environmental Science with a major concentration in Fisheries Science and/or Wildlife Science. Candidates must have strong written and oral communication skills targeting various audiences. Good interpersonal skills and able to carry out assigned duties in both individual and team settings. Ability to represent the interests of the agency at meetings with partners, stakeholders, and the public. Familiar with commonly available computer productivity software.

Preferred qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in a marine science-related discipline and 2 years of experience in the marine science field, a relevant graduate degree and 1 year of experience, or an equivalent combination of these. Prior experience performing marine mammal research, management, and/or outreach. Experience managing and analyzing large datasets using commonly available software, such as Excel, Access, R, and GIS. Experience developing text/figures for scientific reports or outreach materials. The ability to work independently on multiple initiatives simultaneously, with minimal supervision, and complete tasks within time and budget constraints.
