Ocean Career: BMF Scotland Outreach and Engagement Officer

The Role

Blue Marine is seeking an Outreach and Engagement Officer to join our Scotland team in a brand new role.  The successful candidate will work to connect marine science, education and outreach – directly contributing to the protection of Scotland’s marine environment and coastal communities.  Based within Blue Marine’s Scotland team, and working closely with our central Education Unit, you will help deliver Blue Marine’s education, outreach and engagement strategy across Scotland.

This role will be critical in raising public awareness and building community and political support for for sustainable inshore fisheries management and the protection of Scotland’s MPAs and Priority Marine Features. The role will use creative educations tools and engagement activities to bring marine conservation to life for schools, communities and decision makers. You’ll help to maximize public awareness and participation in the protection of Scotland’s vital marine habitats and ecosystems, to properly protect them alongside support for low impact, sustainable and equitable use of Scotland’s seas.

This role will require a full, clean driver’s license and access to your own vehicle due to the associated travel, in addition to the appropriate background checks for your audience. Blue Marine hopes the successful candidate can start in November to ensure we capitalize on key inshore marine protection opportunities.

Skills and experience required

  • Experience in working with schoolchildren and coordinating and delivering education initiatives.
  • Experience in creation of engaging and impactful educational resources both digital and physical.
  • Extensive knowledge of environmental, preferably marine conservation issues, and UK or Scotland marine education or policy.
  • Experience in marine and or climate / environmental education, engagement and outreach.
  • Relevant qualifications and experience of marine science, marine conservation or fisheries.
  • Demonstrable experience in delivering learning sessions for young people and the public.
  • Excellent oral and written skills for communicating and influencing varied audiences, including policy makers, media and the public.
  • Proven ability to lead cross organizational projects, ensuring effective project management and coordination.
  • Proven ability to manage relationships with a broad range of stakeholders – communities, the public, government, politicians etc.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated and able to work using own initiative.
  • A motivated self-starter who displays a strong work ethic.
  • Aptitude and ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks and meet key deadlines.
  • Command of Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Full, clean driver’s license and access to own vehicle
  • Disclosure Scotland check
  • Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check


Salary range: £30,000 – £35,000

Location: Scotland. You can be based at our Edinburgh office. However, flexible remote working is also required, as the role is expected to include travel around Scotland.
