Ocean Career: CWT Seagrass Research Assistant

Are you passionate about marine conservation and eager to gain hands-on experience in habitat restoration? We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Seagrass Trainee to support the delivery of seagrass conservation and restoration projects through practical fieldwork, equipment management, volunteer support and day-today operation of the seagrass storage facility at South Walney. This exciting 9-month traineeship is designed as an entry-level development opportunity, providing practical experience and training for someone looking to build a career in marine conservation, ecological restoration or environmental management.

Main Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Work under the guidance of the Marine Officer to contribute to the effective delivery of project targets and wider team objectives
  • Assist with seagrass surveys and monitoring
  • Support collection of ecological and environmental data
  • Assist with restoration activities as required
  • Help prepare equipment and fieldwork logistics
  • Assist on data analysis across all seagrass projects
  • Monitor the seed growing facility at South Walney Nature Reserve weekly, lead on water changes and weekly maintenance duties
  • Ensure facilities are maintained safely and effectively
  • Support community engagement activities.
  • Help deliver citizen science events and practical conservation activities.
  • Develop maps and reports as necessary

Health & Safety:

  • Ensure all fieldwork activities are conducted safely, following best practices and risk assessments.

Supporting the Trust

  • Raise the profile of Cumbria Wildlife Trust.
  • Develop and participate in educational aspects of the Trust’s work including events, guided walks and illustrated talks.
  • Any other duties that may reasonably arise from time to time.
  • All tasks and responsibilities to be carried out in accordance with the Trust’s policies and procedures.

Salary: £22,236 per annum (£27,795 FTE) plus pension contribution of 9% based on a 28-hour week
