Ocean Career: Environmental Analyst at San Francisco Estuary Institute

The Environmental Analyst will be a member of the Clean Water Program at SFEI and will support diverse monitoring and research activities undertaken by the RMP and other Clean Water projects.

SFEI is the premier aquatic science institute in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since the early 1990s, we have been providing independent science to keep the aquatic systems of the Bay and beyond healthy and thriving.

SFEI is seeking an Environmental Analyst to work on the Regional Monitoring Program for Water Quality in San Francisco Bay (RMP). This is a full-time position for a candidate with a Bachelor’s degree in a pertinent scientific field and work experience in water quality issues, particularly environmental chemistry.

In general, the Environmental Analyst must be able to: (1) coordinate, prepare for, and participate in field work, including stormwater and other types of monitoring (2) assist in management of committees of stakeholders; (3) review and synthesize data and information from various sources; (4) have the ability to work well in teams as well work independently with general direction from senior scientific staff; and (5) communicate findings effectively in presentations, reports, memoranda, and scientific journals.

Primary areas of responsibility:

  • Program coordination and implementation (scheduling meetings, producing meeting summaries, developing contracts, coordinating with analytical labs, updating websites, logistics for Annual Meeting) (40%)
  • Stormwater monitoring coordination (managing all aspects of Bay RMP stormwater work including coordinating with analytical labs, preparing supplies and field kits, field sampling, post sampling processing, shipping samples, coordinating with data services on field data) (25-30%)
  • Other monitoring coordination (coordinating with analytical labs, preparing supplies, scheduling field days with external sampling partners, sampling, processing samples, shipping samples, following up with labs) (10%)
  • Project support (as needed) (20%)

Specific Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, geology, engineering, or another related scientific field. Regardless of the degree, an understanding of environmental chemistry is a requirement.
  • Familiarity with environmental chemistry or environmental science, particularly field work, data analysis, and report writing.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects at once and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and writing skills and ability to synthesize information.
  • Ability to work well in teams as well work independently with general direction from senior scientific staff.
  • Ability to contribute to, or lead, aspects of field work that may periodically involve working unusual hours (e.g., late nights, early mornings, and weekends) and carrying 40 pound field equipment for short durations.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
