Fishery Officers receive an annual allowance for performance of duties as a Fisheries Officer of $6,500 and a First Aid allowance of $300 in addition to their basic salary. DUTIES
Under the supervision of the detachment supervisor, without being exhaustive, the main responsibilities of the position are as follows:
- Produce the work schedules of fishery officers.
- Develop weekly work plans based on regional and sectoral priorities.
- Supervise fishery officers.
- Carry out patrols and investigations to enforce the Fisheries Act and its regulations.
- Monitor career progression of trainee fishery officers.
- Work closely with other districts, sectors and other law enforcement agencies.

A pool of qualified candidates may be established and used to fill similar positions with various tenures, security profiles and linguistic requirements within Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
EDUCATION
- High school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience in law enforcement.
- Degree equivalency
EXPERIENCES
- Experience in field law enforcement functions including powers similar to those exercised by fishery officers (arrest, search, seizure with or without warrants, preparation of legal proceedings, procedures for presentation of evidence at court, etc.).
- Experience leading law enforcement operations in the field.
EDUCATION (ASSET)
- Successfully complete the Fishery Officer Career Progression Program (FOCPP), or any other training program within the scope of the law.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
For candidates who have not completed the FOCPP:
- Complete and succeed the fishery officer conversion and upgrade course.
For all candidates:
- Work on short notice, overtime, shift-work, evenings, weekends, and Statutory Holidays.
- Consent to assignment (for a limited time) or deployment* (permanent) anywhere in Canada to carry out all manner of law enforcement activities, including (but not limited to) land, coastal and on the high seas (air and maritime patrols), forensic investigations or special operations.
- Meet and maintain standards relating to physical and psychological health.
- Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license (emergency vehicle class if necessary).
- Hold and maintain a first aid certificate and a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR**) certificate.
- Meet and maintain DFO proficiency standards for the use of force.
- Carry and use firearms as well as other prohibited or restricted weapons and defensive equipment.
- Wear a uniform and protective equipment and clothing.
- Work or travel on land, at sea or in the air, in various terrains and in various isolation conditions for varying periods of time and in all kinds of weather conditions.
- Work and train in or near water and on vessels of various sizes.
- Be able to testify in court***.
*Deployments may only be necessary in exceptional and extreme circumstances. Note that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans does not routinely permanently deploy fishery officers away from their home.
**Standard first aid certificate means the certificate issued by either a qualified person or organization for the successful completion of a two-day first aid course, which also includes Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) level C and Automated external defibrillator (AED) Training.
*** For the ability to testify in court: investigating agencies, as first party, must provide the Crown, with disclosure of evidence and findings of serious misconduct, which includes setting out its record of misconduct. Preference
Preference will be given to veterans first and then to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
