The European project MiningImpact investigates the impacts of deep-sea mining on the marine ecosystem and its functions. Scientific results contribute to international regulations for seabed mineral exploitation. Within this project the research unit Marine Geosystems of the research division Marine Biogeochemistry is offering a position for a Doctoral Researcher (m/f/d) in assessing the environmental impacts of deep-seabed mining starting as soon as possible. The position offers the possibility to attain a doctoral degree in natural sciences.
Job Description
You will perform a comparison of the environmental impacts of deep-seabed mining and conventional land-based mining operations applying a recently developed metric. You will utilize the full breadth of data from polymetallic nodule ecosystems collected by the MiningImpact project, including new data from an upcoming expedition. You will apply state-of-the-art numerical and statistical models to assess impacts on biogeochemical processes and ecosystem health. You will interact with colleagues in an inter- and transdisciplinary research environment. You will publish your results in international peer-reviewed journals and present them at international conferences and workshops.
