Your role at HMC

Howell Marine Consulting (HMC) are looking for a Research Impact Director who can lead work across public, private and academic sectors to maximize impact on over £20 million worth of UK research across four leading UKRI research programs – ECOWind, ECOFlow, INSITE and ValMAS and to develop new research funding opportunities in the UK and globally.

You will be our Research Impact Team Director, working closely with other Directors as part of HMC’s Senior Leadership Team, as well as researchers and policy makers, coordinating and managing activities to achieve research goals and deliver critical impact to help shape future marine policy and delivery, with duties including:

Specific role requirements:

  • Provide leadership of the Research Impact team, including strategic growth and direction.
  • Create and deliver a 5 year business development strategy, 12 month plan and KPIs.
  • Lead the HMC research impact offering, including the development of new research programs.
  • Provide technical thought leadership both internally and externally.
  • Be accountable for the delivery of HMC work on Research Impact, to time, expected standards, and budget.
  • Manage resource and capacity within the Research Impact team.
  • Contribute to the development of HMC’s strategic plan.
  • Be accountable for effective delivery of impact and program level scientific objectives, including integration of projects within research programs and across the UK and global research landscape.
  • Working closely with HMC sector leads, act as an interface between the research community, government and private sector to develop the delivery of marine science into operational decision making as well as management of external affairs and science profile raising.
  • Understanding and keeping up to date with relevant advances in the research community, industry trends and technology developments.
  • Networking with the academic, public and private sectors
  • Writing articles, blogs and supporting the communication of science outputs and HMC’s contribution to research impact as well as appearing at conferences on behalf of HMC.
  • Mentoring and managing the Research Impact Team.
  • Any other duties required in the spirit of the post.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need:

  • A post-graduate degree in a relevant subject.
  • Applied experience in government, industry, NGO, academia or consulting at a senior level.
  • Familiarity with intergovernmental, regional, or national governmental bodies.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to build strong client and stakeholder relationships.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience of working with the academic community to support impact in the public or private sector.
  • A strategic and innovative mindset, coupled with the ability to make informed decisions backed by evidence.


Salary: £70,000 increased in line with inflation.
