Ocean Career: Marine Biological Laboratory Ecosystems Center Research Assistant I

The MBL (Marine Biological Laboratory) Ecosystems Center seeks a full-time Research Assistant I to work on carbon cycling in coastal wetlands. This DOE-funded collaborative project with Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks to improve mechanistic process understanding and modeling of tidal wetland hydro-biogeochemistry. In the summer, the research assistant will be stationed at the Plum Island Ecosystems Long-Term Ecological Research site near Newbury MA. The RA will help maintain sensors and collect samples for a variety of biological and chemical analyses from the field. Housing will be provided in the summer. In the winter, the candidate will work on MBL campus in Woods Hole, analyzing samples in the lab and support data curation and analysis. Funding is provided for two years.

The successful applicant should also be willing to help with basic preparations for field work such as organizing, cleaning and maintaining gear and small boats.

Additional Information: We seek a motivated recent graduate, who will work independently—once oriented to projects—but also cooperatively in a larger interdisciplinary group.

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science degree in biology, chemistry, environmental or marine science, biometeorology, physics, or similar.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience or interest in field-based and sensor-based data collection (e.g., using Campbell Scientific dataloggers), ideally with a focus on micrometeorological measurements
  • Experience with or interest in sediment biogeochemistry
  • Familiarity with small boats (driving and trailering) in estuarine waters

Physical Requirements:

Field work occurs in physical challenging terrain (soft wet sediment, tall vegetation, seasonal climate variability. Willingness to work in the field during inclement weather, ability to lift 50 lbs and to swim are required.
